Aimee Sallee featured in Meet the Rangers

2012 Aug 31

Aimee Sallee of Lake Cormorant and member of the color guard was among those recognized at Meet the Rangers on Aug. 27 in Senatobia. Members of the Ranger football team, men's and women's soccer teams, Ranger Marching Band and Color Guard, Rangerettes, cheerleaders and coaches were recognized at the event. The Ranger Band gave a preview of this year's halftime show featuring the music of Earth, Wind and Fire. Northwest Sports Information Director Kevin Maloney was the event emcee, introducing the student athletes and performers and recognizing the coaching staffs.

The Rangers return 19 players from last season and are welcoming 31 new freshman and five first year players. Head Football Coach Ricky Woods, who is beginning his fifth season with the Rangers commented on the upcoming season. "We have a lot of experience on defense, and offensively, we have guys back who make a big difference. We also have some good, young freshmen who will have to produce for us real quick, and we're optimistic that we'll have a good season," Woods said. The Rangers are ranked at No. 11 to start the season in the NJCAA Top 20 Poll and is one of four schools from the MACJC in the poll.

Peter Jarjoura, head coach of the men's and women's soccer team is beginning his 11th season.

Last year's women's team finished third place in the MACJC North Division and the men finished fourth in the north.

On the men's team, Northwest welcomes 15 newcomers, including two out-of-state players, both of whom Jarjoura feels will make an impact. "I feel confident that they will be compatible with our current freshman and returners," Jarjoura said. "I think that combining them with our returning sophomores, they should be players we look to also step up and count on this season."

The Lady Rangers welcome 17 newcomers overall, including two out-of-state players. "I really feel that we will compete well in our division this year and make a serious run at a playoff appearance," Jarjoura said.

He expects the newcomers, as well as the handful of returning players, to guide both teams into the post season. "I expect our returning players to lead the way for our newcomers," Jajoura said.

Hurricane Isaac, along with storms and heavy rain, caused the cancellation of the 2012 football opener against Southwest Mississippi. The home-opening soccer matches against Southwest were postponed, and will be made up at a later date.
