Angela Hanson of Southaven Among Several Northwest Students to Compete at DECA State Conference

Angela Hanson of Southaven was one of several students in Northwest Mississippi Community College's Hotel and Restaurant Management Technology program at DeSoto Center who traveled to Jackson Feb. 29-March 2 to attend the Collegiate DECA State Career Development Conference.

Northwest won the Pin Design contest, which will be featured on the T-shirts worn by every member across the state. Northwest also won the Banner Design contest. Their design will be featured on the banner shown at the international conference. In addition, Northwest placed fifth in the Chapter of the Year Competition.

Winners from Northwest were as follows: Mickey Heilman of Southaven, second place, Outstanding Local Chapter Member contest; Heilman and Jonathan Ward of Horn Lake, fourth place in Business to Business Marketing; Angela Hanson of Southaven, second place in Website Design; Desirra Garrett of Senatobia and Alex Suh of Hernando, fifth place in Sports and Entertainment Marketing; Tiffany Kyles, of Cordova, Tenn., fifth place in Human Resources Management; Deborah Thompson of Hernando, Dante Bennett of Walls and Terrie Smith of Byhalia, sixth place in Culinary Arts; and Peter Franklin of Hernando, Lela Tedford of Horn Lake and Nakevia Joyner of Hernando, second place in Culinary Arts. As second and third place winners, Hanson, Tedford, Thompson and Bennett will be eligible to attend the international conference in April.

"I am extremely proud of all of the students who attended the state conference. They competed with students throughout the state, not only from other community colleges, but from universities as well. We received 15 awards with 14 students in attendance," said Katherine Mistillis, program instructor.
