Christina Walker contributes artwork to Northwest holiday art sale

2015 Dec 8

Christina Walker of Southaven is one of 27 Northwest Mississippi Community College art students who participated in the annual holiday art sale on Friday, Dec. 4 in the Art Gallery on the Senatobia campus.

The sale, which helps raise money for the Art Department, is a great opportunity for individuals to buy original artwork created by students and faculty, according to Lawayne House, Art Department chair. Drawings, paintings, ceramics, photographs and other creative works will be for sale.

"The Les Fauves Holiday Sale is an event at Northwest everyone looks forward to each year," said House. "This annual sale allows our students to exhibit their work and teaches them you don't always know what the public will buy."

All proceeds--except for a 10 percent commission fee--go to the student. The commission fee goes into the Les Fauves Art Club account, which helps cover future expenses.

All visitors are encouraged to enter their names in a door prize giveaway. The prize includes original artwork by House and Northwest art faculty Ashley Chavis and Danita Lloyd.

"Though the sale is a joyful event, for our students it's a valuable learning experience. Supported by the Northwest faculty, administration and staff, along with the greater Senatobia community, this sale is a great opportunity to purchase original works of art at reasonable prices," said House.

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Fine Arts Division offers classes in the fundamentals of drawing, painting, ceramics, art history and computer graphics for individuals seeking opportunities for a career in the arts or for personal enrichment.
