Mary Wilson featured in Meet the Rangers at Northwest

2011 Sep 1

Mary Wilson of Pope and member of the Ranger Cheerleaders was recognized at Meet the Rangers held August 25 on the Senatobia campus for their participation in this fall athletic season at Northwest Mississippi Community College. Members of the cheerleading squad were recognized, and the Ranger Band gave a preview performance of this year's halftime show, which features the music of Van Halen. Athletes, managers and head coaches of the football team and both soccer programs were also introduced.

Students and athletes alike are looking forward to the upcoming fall athletic seasons and shared their thoughts on Meet the Rangers. "I was really excited to see the band perform and give a taste of their halftime show," said freshman Paula Gallagher from Olive Branch. "I am also looking forward to the upcoming soccer season, and I plan on showing my support by attending as many games as I can."

The head coaches had many encouraging things to say about the upcoming season. "This off season, we have done some strong recruiting around the area, and I feel as if that will help us against our division opponents," said head soccer coach Peter Jarjoura. "All I am asking of our players is to do our best and give a one hundred percent effort in each game. I would like us to make the playoffs, but we will just have to take everything one step at a time and see where we go from there."

Head football coach Ricky Woods also discussed his expectations for this year's team. "We have picked up some crucial transfers in the off season, and that should help us to replace some gaps we have following our sophomore departures."

When asked about his thoughts on a possible postseason appearance, Coach Woods said, "We're focusing on our first game right now, and we are really taking everything one game at a time. We need to see how we do in our first few games before discussing postseason chances."

"I am excited to be a part of this team," said freshman football player Austin Douglas of Batesville. "I think we have a lot of talent and I'm expecting us to win some big games this season.

The Ranger soccer team will be at home on Sept. 20, when they will face off against East Central Community College. The women's game will begin at 2 pm, with the men's game immediately following. The Ranger football team will also be in action against East Mississippi Community College on Sept 15. The game will be held at home, with the kickoff slated for 6:30 pm.
