Northwest Practical Nursing Student Jacquelyn Jones Visits With Medical Flight Team

2012 Oct 5

Northwest Mississippi Community College practical nursing student, Jacquelyn Jones of Charleston met with members of the medical flight team Hospital Wing Sept. 24 after they landed on the Senatobia campus. The team visited the students to speak about their professional experiences.

The Hospital Wing is a non-profit air medical transport, which provides inter-hospital transfers as well as emergency scene calls. The Wing has four bases located in Memphis, Oxford, Brownsville, Tenn. and Selmer, Tenn. The crew that visited Northwest was from the Memphis base.

"This visit was beneficial for our students because they were able to learn about this exciting profession as a possible career path," said Jennifer Lance, RN, practical nursing instructor. Lance said that the flight crew, which included Cindy Bailey, RN, Josh Steele, paramedic and Curt Wren, pilot, spoke with students regarding the types of patients they care for including trauma, burn, medical, pediatrics and obstetrics. Students were educated on the required qualifications to work for the Hospital Wing, and were provided time to interact and ask questions with the crew.

"Although many of our students may choose not to become flight nurses, hearing the team's first-hand accounts of their experiences in the field and seeing how the helicopter functions as a medical station will help our students understand the resources that are available to them in the event they will ever need to call a medical flight team," said Davis.

Flight nurses and flight paramedics train once a year at the Med in Memphis to keep their skills in advanced burn, cardiac, medical, neurological, pediatric emergencies and trauma care up to date. Hospital Wing pilots must have 3,000 hours total flight time with 2,000 helicopter hours as a pilot in command.

The Practical Nursing program at Northwest is a 12-month program, which requires a 16 on the ACT and minimum 800 on the NET entrance exam.
