Regina Shelton Promotes Community Literacy and Learning Through Northwest Education Association

2012 Oct 5

Regina Shelton of Senatobia is among several students involved in the Northwest Mississippi Community College Education Association, which is dedicated to promoting a positive image of education in the community.

The club participates in service projects each year and reads to children in Northwest's Early Childhood Education Technology program and in local schools. The club also provides speakers who work in the field of education who share information about area universities and how to prepare for transferring after graduation from Northwest. The club will have a visit from Mississippi State University and Delta State University this fall.

Speakers scheduled for the spring semester are Thomas Spencer, vice superintendent of DeSoto County Schools, who will speak about how to prepare for a job interview in teaching. They are also looking forward to having a member of the Mississippi Department of Education speak to the club. 'It would have been so helpful to me to have had this kind of support when I was preparing to teach, " said reading instructor Teri Hawkins, one of the club's sponsors. Each year, the members of the club also choose a service project. This year, NWEA has chosen to collect small dog and cat food cans for the Tate County Animal Shelter, according to Hawkins.

Hannah Goff, a sophomore education student from Hernando is the president of NWEA this year. "To be a member of NWEA means you are responsible, accountable and very serious about continuing your career in becoming an educator. It allows you to experience what takes place in the classroom from the teacher's point of view. It also prepares us to transfer to a four-year college or university after attending Northwest," Goff said.
