Corrected: Northwest nursing students show community spirit at annual convention

Sorry for the mistake in the headline the first time we sent it. We appreciate your patience.

Senatobia, MS (05/15/2017) — Northwest Mississippi Community College's Student Nurses Association (SNA) captured the prestigious "Spirit of the Community" Award from the annual Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nursing Student Association (MOSA) conference held April 6 in Tupelo.

The award was given to them for their cookbook project with News Channel 3 meteorologist Jim Jaggers. The cookbook, entitled "Cook, Jim, Cook" features recipes from nursing faculty, former faculty, student nurses and nursing alumni. Half of the proceeds from the sale of the cookbook go to Jagger's "Go, Jim, Go" campaign for LeBohneur Children's Hospital. The other half of the proceeds will be used for SNA projects, with the first project to establish a scholarship in memory of Diane Biffle, a 2013 nursing graduate who was a very active member of SNA.

Nursing students Daphne Bishop of Hernando and Shannon Erhart of Oxford participated in the M-OADN Scholar's Bowl at the convention. Bishop was nominated for the M-OADN Outstanding ADN Student and Brandon Boozer of Benoit was nominated for the M-OADN Bobbie Anderson Scholarship.

"We are immensely proud of our nursing students. Their hard work on the cookbook, along with the faculty and staff is yet another example of their caring for others and a passion for helping their community. We are honored to be a part of "Go Jim Go" to support LeBohneur Children's Hospital and we want to honor the memory of Diane, who we all loved and admired," said Dr. Denise Bynum, division director of Nursing. The cookbooks are available at a cost of $15 each, Bynum said.

For more information on the nursing program or to purchase a cookbook, contact Bynum at 662-562-3498 or email dtbynum@northwestms.edu.

Suggested cutline: Jessica Kinkade of Hernando, president of the Northwest Mississippi Community College Student Nurses Association (SNA), right, shows off the club's "Spirit of the Community" Award, which they won at the annual Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nursing Student Association (MOSA) conference held April 6 in Tupelo. Kinkade is credited with naming the cookbook "Cook, Jim, Cook" which features recipes from nursing faculty, former faculty, student nurses and nursing alumni. Half of the proceeds from the sale of the cookbook go to News Channel 3 meteorologist Jim Jaggers' "Go, Jim, Go" campaign for LeBohneur Children's Hospital. The other half of the proceeds will be used for SNA projects, with the first project to establish a scholarship in memory of Diane Biffle, a 2013 nursing graduate who was a very active member of SNA. Congratulating Kinkade is Monica Williams, nursing instructor and SNA sponsor. (Photo by LaJuan Tallo)
