Four Northwest Students Win at 36th Annual State Art Competition

Senatobia, MS (05/02/2024) — Northwest Mississippi Community College's Art Department took home awards from the 36th Annual Student Art Exhibition and Competition held by the Mississippi Community/Junior College Art Instructors Association (MCJCAIA) and hosted this year at Southwest Mississippi Community College March 27.

Each year schools have a limited number of works that can be entered into the exhibition. Artwork can be anything from the 2-D categories of Drawing, Design, Painting/Mixed Media, Photography, Printmaking, and Digital/Computer Art as well as 3-D categories of Ceramics and 3-D Design.

Four Northwest students won prestigious awards at this competition: sophomore Logan Harden of Hernando won first place in Printmaking; sophomore Katherine Correa of Ashland won third place in Ceramics; freshman Samya McGlothian of Southaven won second place in Printmaking, and freshman Margaret Littlecott of Senatobia won second place in Digital Art.

"We had students bring works in to be considered for the competition, and the art faculty selected the strongest pieces to enter," said Lucia Nelson, art instructor. "Not only is it an honor to have work included in this exhibition, but it is a great line on the students' resumes, especially students who will be transferring and seeking scholarships to a four-year institution. Also, there were cash prizes awarded, which always motivates our students! We really are so proud of the students that participated this year."
