Mississippi Community/Junior College Art Instructors Association (MC/JCAIA) Student Art Competition/Exhibition

by Sarah Smith

Senatobia, MS (04/14/2023) — Mississippi Community/Junior College Art Instructors Association (MC/JCAIA) Student Art Competition awards ceremony was held March 31 at the Senatobia campus of Northwest Mississippi Community College in the Art Department where the winning pieces were on display until the awards ceremony concluded that Friday.

This competition is for students currently enrolled in one of Mississippi's public community or junior colleges. The pieces submitted must have been completed while a student was enrolled at the community or junior college they are attending and must be new pieces not previously used for the MC/JCAIA Competitive Art Exhibition.

Two Northwest students won awards in the same category of Painting/Mixed Media, taking home second and third place.

Annie Haddock won second place in Painting/Mixed Media for her piece "Two Sturgeons."

"Annie Haddock is a serious student who shows a great deal of creative tenacity when making work," Art Department Chairman Lawayne House said. "She pushes through with imagination and care in how her works are crafted."

Peyton Barr won third place in Painting/Mixed Media for her piece "Decay of Grandeur." Barr described this piece as a surrealist themed woman in a cycle of ideals that eventually causes her to fall apart. From the birds of prey to the cannon barrels, it parallels wisdom, decay, destruction, and industry.

"I planned to use symbolism that alludes to nature and human organization, national identity, beauty and decay," Barr said.

Awards were given in the following categories: 3-D pieces/Sculptures, Ceramics, Drawing, 2-D Designs, Graphic/Computer Art, Painting/Mixed Media, Photography, and Printmaking, and Best in Show.
