Northwest Mississippi Community College Announces Ranger START Summer Camp for Grades 3 - 8

by Sarah Smith

Senatobia, MS (04/06/2023) — Ranger START Educational Summer Camp is happening June 12-14 at Northwest Mississippi Community College. It will cater to two age groups third through fifth graders and sixth through eighth graders. The event is three full days of fun and educational programming about START: science, technology, art, recreation, and tools.

Dr. Matthew Domas, Vice President for Instruction at Northwest, explained that college-level instructors and coaches will actively be out there with students teaching them and working with them at this camp. Faculty and staff will work with campers to expand their ideas and current knowledge.

"It's an exciting time at Northwest," Dr. Domas said.

Each day is broken up into different areas all starting a 7:30 a.m. with check-in at the Haraway Center, followed by a full day of events till 5 p.m. Every morning will begin with two engaging sessions, then it's lunch time. After lunch is a Scavenger Hunt followed by two more sessions, then the campers go home for the day.

The first day is all about exploration in science. Campers will learn about science by doing engaging labs like dissecting a heart, using a microscope, and exploring everyday items in a new way. This will be led by Northwest Instructors Robin Robison, Melissa Greene, Melody Williams, Dr. Lindsay Massie, and Dr. Michael McPherson.

The second day is all about art, technology, and tools. This day will encompass 3D printing, painting, printmaking, drawing, and other artistic pursuits. They will learn with instruction by skilled local artists alongside Northwest instructors, Lawayne House and Lucia Nelson. The 3D printing workshop will be taught by digital librarian, Maya Berry.

On the third day it's all about recreation with top NWCC sports staff.

First, they will hoop it with Rangers and learn fundamentals of basketball with Shane Oakley, NWCC Head Men's Basketball Coach, and LaTaryl Williams, NWCC Head Women's Basketball Coach.

Then they will hit the goal, working on tactics, speed, and agility in soccer with NWCC Head Men's Soccer Coach, Michael Sullivan, and James Beattie, NWCC Head Women's Soccer Coach.

They'll take to the field kicking and passing, learning how to block and defend with tackle dummies, led by NWCC Head Football Coach, Benjy Parker, and his coaching staff.

Then they'll serve up some fun at the volleyball court with fundamentals of passing, serving, setting and hitting, led by NWCC Head Volleyball Coach, Allison Burchyett.

The three-day camp is $250 per student, and is available for registration at https://www.northwestms.edu/camp
