Northwest Mississippi Community College's Department of Fine Arts Emerging Artists Recital Set for Nov. 9 at the Heindl Center for the Performing Arts

Senatobia, MS (11/04/2026) — Northwest Mississippi Community College's Department of Fine Arts will present its Emerging Artists Recital Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Heindl Center for the Performing Arts. The program will feature sophomore music pathway students.

This event gives students a chance to showcase skills they have been working hard to refine during their time at Northwest. Many of the selections that students are working on are also part of their auditions to four-year institutions and for scholarship opportunities to support continuation of their musical education.

"The recital provides an opportunity to recognize their growth and accomplishments while showcasing the variety of musical talent within our program," said Jennifer Whitehead, Northwest instrumental music instructor. "This year's performers represent several areas of study, including vocal music, brass, woodwinds, and percussion."

Preparation for this event included students working individually on the pieces that they are wanting to perform as well as with their applied music instructors throughout the semester, focusing on developing technical skills, musicianship, and musical interpretation. In addition to their private applied lessons, they participate in Recital Class where they work on performances, masterclasses, and develop critical listening and communication skills in addition to working on research for their selected repertoire.

"The Emerging Artists Recital provides an opportunity for students to bring together the skills they have developed through their applied lessons, academic coursework, ensemble experiences, collaborative rehearsals, and individual practice," said Whitehead. "It also reflects the collective efforts of our music faculty, whose instruction, mentorship, and dedication throughout the students' time at Northwest contribute to their overall musical development."

This performance will be approximately an hour and 15 minutes and will feature everything from classical voice repertoire and traditional instrumental works, to contemporary compositions. Whitehead said she hopes that audiences recognize all the hard work, hours of dedicated preparation and growth these students have made during their time.

"I also hope the audience gains an appreciation for the variety of musical opportunities available at Northwest and the important role our music faculty play in helping students develop as musicians and prepare for the next stage of their education," said Whitehead. "Most importantly, I hope our students leave the stage feeling proud of what they have accomplished and excited about where their musical journeys will take them next."

The event is free and open to the public on Nov. 9 at the Heindl Center for the Performing Arts. Everyone is welcome to attend.
