Northwest Mississippi Community College Theta Sigma chapter (Senatobia campus) celebrates PTK Awareness Week September 22-26, 2025

by By Victoria Penny, PTK Advisor Theta Sigma and Instructional Librarian

Senatobia, MS (09/18/2025) — Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is the official international honor society for two-year colleges. It recognizes the academic achievement of college students and provides opportunities for its members to grow as scholars and leaders.

Phi Theta Kappa has been connecting standout students with opportunities to create the futures they want for over 100 years. PTK was founded in 1918, and the international headquarters is located in Jackson, Mississippi. Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is known by its hallmarks: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship.

Membership is an honor and by invitation only. To receive an invitation to join Phi Theta Kappa, students must complete at least 12 hours of coursework toward an associate degree at Northwest and have a minimum cumulative 3.50 grade point average.

However, it's more than just an honor society. PTK celebrates academic achievement, but its mission goes even further - offering scholarships, leadership development, career preparation, and a supportive community.

Joining is an investment in your academic and professional future. Members gain access to exclusive scholarships, leadership opportunities, and a network of like-minded peers. They also enhance their resumes, stand out to potential employers, and gain valuable experience in giving back to the community.

Integrated Marketing Communications major at the University of Mississippi and Northwest Alumna, Taylor Lindsey, said that PTK opened doors for her to gain leadership, friendship and experience.

"PTK has helped me by putting me in a space with like-minded people," said Lindsey. "Thanks to PTK, I was able to have a community of people who care about their grades, want to engage with the community, and are always trying to be better in general. People in PTK are never satisfied with being stagnant, and this encouraged me to adopt the mentality of constant growth. Some PTK advantages are recognition, enrichment, and of course, scholarships. I am truly grateful for how PTK has helped me in all of these aspects because it has given me a boost and some cushion for my transfer experience at Ole Miss."

Members are 3 times more likely to complete an associate degree and/or transfer to a four-year college. Eligible PTK members can earn significant scholarships-up to thousands of dollars-when they transfer to partner universities. Northwest PTK students have successfully transferred to a variety of institutions, including the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, University of Southern Mississippi, Delta State University. William Carey University, Mississippi College, University of Memphis, and more.

Northwest PTK students also have the chance to learn leadership skills by working with their peers to conduct academic research on community needs and plan and implement relevant service projects.

Service to other organizations in our community by Theta Sigma chapter in the last few years has included LeBonheur Children's Hospital, Senatobia Public Library, Interfaith Council on Poverty, Hope Ministries, Senatobia-Tate Animal Shelter, Southaven Head Start, and NWCC Child Development Center.
