Northwest Nursing Students and Faculty Awarded for Their Outstanding Work

by Sarah Smith-Hutchinson

Senatobia, MS (04/18/2026) — Northwest Mississippi Community College students, alumni and faculty were recognized at the Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (MOADN) Convention on April 8 and 9 in Tupelo for their work and scholarship.

"It was exciting to receive these awards in a public setting, but they came as no surprise," said Northwest's Director of Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Dr. Courtney McMullen. "I have the privilege of witnessing the dedication, hard work, and passion of our faculty and students every day. These recognitions simply affirm what we already know; that their efforts truly go above and beyond. This commitment to our Northwest values, including creativity and excellence, is what makes the Northwest ADN program so exceptional. Nursing education is constantly evolving, and we are committed to remaining current with the most effective ways to educate and evaluate our students. This level of effort, innovation, and care is part of what makes the Northwest ADN program so special, and why our community partners consistently welcome Northwest nursing graduates with confidence. I am incredibly proud of these hardworking individuals and grateful for their dedication. I am also excited about what lies ahead, as I know there is even more success to come."

Northwest students Jamie Petty of Oxford and Wilbert Sawyer of Oxford won third for the Scholar's Bowl competition. Northwest alumnus Matthew Thornburg, class of 2025, was nominated for Outstanding ADN Nurse in Practice. This award honors those who recently graduated an ADN program.

Students who were nominated for other awards include Presley Hicks of Senatobia, who was nominated for the Bobbie Anderson Scholarship, Park for Outstanding ADN Student, and Park and Parker for Student Poster Presentation.
