by Sarah Smith-Hutchinson

Senatobia, MS (10/24/2025) — Northwest Mississippi Community College's President, Dr. Michael J. Heindl accepted the Excellence in Local and District Government Award from Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves on Thursday, Oct. 23 in Jackson.

"I'm very humbled and honored to be able to be recognized in this way," said Dr. Heindl. "Our college's accomplishments are due to the dedicated and hard-working staff, faculty, and administration at Northwest. We are a student-first institution seeking to help transform student lives, and I'm thankful to be at an institution that does just that."

The Excellence in Government Awards were created to celebrate the accomplishments and hard work of Mississippians supporting their local, district or state government. The award recognizes excellence and innovation in the management of administrative procedures which increase the quality of public service at these government levels. The award is governed by the Mississippi State Personnel Board. Two awards are given, one for state government and one for local and district government.

Gov. Reeves commended Dr. Heindl on his amazing accomplishments at the college, including but not limited to his work on the Capital Campaign, Ranger athletics securing multiple national championships, and growing the college's Foundation endowment from $10 million to $15 million.

"Dr Heindl, thank you for making Northwest Mississippi Community College a pillar of learning and a vital asset to our state," said Gov. Reeves at the presentation. "What you're doing is preparing students not for the jobs of the last 50 years, but for the jobs of the next 50 years, and the impact you're making will last for generations."

Dr. Heindl was nominated for the award by Northwest Board of Trustees Chairman Cory Uselton, who praised Dr. Heindl for his service not only to Northwest, but to other community colleges, serving in a variety of roles across the state.

"Prior to his appointment at Northwest, he built a distinguished career in community college leadership through progressive administrative and teaching roles across Mississippi," said Uselton.

Dr. Heindl's service continues beyond the borders of the college as he's on various boards including the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, the National Junior College Athletic Association Legal Advisory Council, the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Legislative Committee and more.

"His career demonstrates not only professional leadership in higher education but also a sustained commitment to family, community, and student success," said Uselton.

Dr. Heindl's dedication to his community begins at home with Dr. Heindl's wife, Jennifer Ingram Heindl, a local nurse practitioner, their three children Taryn, Harrison and Nicholas, and their grandson Jayson.
