Dr. Michael Heindl Selected for Aspen Institute Presidents Fellowship
One of 23 Community College Leaders Nationwide Chosen to Advance Student Success and Economic Mobility
Senatobia, MS (03/26/2026) — The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program has announced that Dr. Michael J. Heindl, president of Northwest Mississippi Community College, has been selected as one of 23 community college leaders nationwide to participate in the 2026-27 Aspen Presidents Fellowship.
The highly selective, year-long fellowship-supported by JPMorganChase-is designed to equip college presidents with the tools, strategies, and networks needed to drive transformational improvements in student success and economic mobility. Fellows will develop and implement reform agendas aimed at increasing the number of students who graduate into high-quality jobs, whether immediately after earning a credential or following transfer to a four-year institution.
"We know from 15 years of intensive research how the best community colleges equip students with the skills and credentials that lead to good jobs and flourishing lives," said Josh Wyner, executive director of the College Excellence Program. "These 23 presidents have committed to strengthening their institutions so those outcomes become the norm for every student."
Throughout the fellowship, participants will collaborate with experienced college presidents, Aspen leaders, and national experts to analyze labor market data, institutional performance, and proven models of excellence. Their reform strategies will be refined through in-depth residential sessions, virtual convenings, and ongoing peer feedback.
The third cohort of Aspen Presidents Fellows represents institutions across 14 states, serving a diverse range of communities-from rural regions to major metropolitan areas. The selected presidents lead colleges with varied missions, including comprehensive, technical, and tribal-serving institutions. Upon completion, they will join a national network of more than 430 fellows, including over 200 sitting community college presidents, all committed to advancing student outcomes and workforce success.
"It's a high honor to be selected for the Aspen Presidents Fellowship," Heindl said. "I look forward to collaborating with fellow presidents from across the country and continuing our work to improve student outcomes at Northwest."
