Northwest Chamber Choir and Guest Choirs Set to Perform at The Heindl Center for the Performing Arts
Senatobia, MS (04/14/2023) — The Northwest Mississippi Community College Chamber Choir will perform their spring concert "Northwest Chamber and Friends: Sing 'Til the Spirit Moves in My Heart" on Thursday, April 20 at 7 p.m. in the Heindl Center for the Performing Arts on the Senatobia campus. The event is a deeply emotional and spiritual concert by Northwest's choirs in collaboration with Olive Branch High School and Mississippi River Chorale. This event is a way of unifying Northwest Choirs with other choirs in the community.
"Music is all about the community it creates and nourishes," said J. Reese Norris, director of Choral Activities.
Norris notes that this concert is a beautiful representation of a world culture and faith with numerous religious ballads that spark inspiration and include moving lyrics.
"Baba Yetu" is a song about Easter, explained Dr. Stellah Mbugua, assistant choral director, and is very timely due to being shortly after the holiday. This concert very much fits the spiritual feeling of the season.
Many other spiritual songs will be performed such as the Lamentations of Jeremiah and "I'm Gonna Sing 'Til the Spirit Moves in My Heart," among others.
The collaborative concert will begin with the Northwest Pop Ensemble who are performing "Song for the Asking" and "All for Us" led by Dr. Saundra Bishop, music instructor.
After the Pop Ensemble performance, Olive Branch High School, Mississippi River Chorale and Northwest Chamber Choir will perform together, followed by songs performed by each group independently.
Tickets are $10 and are available for purchase at northwestms.edu/tickets. Admission is free for students, faculty and staff with a Northwest ID card.
