Northwest Choirs Present "Parting Glass" on Oct. 20
Senatobia, MS (10/16/2026) — Northwest Mississippi Community College Department of Fine Arts Choirs present "Parting Glass," their fall concert on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Heindl Center for the Performing Arts.
"The title of the concert is 'Parting Glass,' after the title of the traditional Scottish folk tune," said Dr. Alex Belohlavek, director of Choral Activities. "Northwest Singers will perform an arrangement of that by Sarah Quartel. Ranger Consort will sing two selections on the theme of love, and Ranger Chorale will present a preview of some of the pieces on their MS ACDA concert program, which is structured as a dream sequence: an invocation and lullaby to fall asleep, wild and fantastical dreams, and then waking to Craig Hella Johnson's arrangement of 'Light of a Clear Blue Morning', in honor of Dolly Parton."
Dr. Belohlavek said that despite the name, their concerts rarely start with a theme in mind, but usually find their way to work together into a theme. All the concerts start with what the students will be learning to help them develop their skills.
"I'm personally looking forward to Ranger Chorale's closing piece, 'O Sapientia' by Slovenian composer Tadeja Vulc," said Dr. Belohlavek. "It mixes the ancient tradition of chant singing with modern compositional techniques and sound effects. It's been a blast to teach, and Ranger Chorale is excited to present it."
All three ensembles will perform a variety of repertoire, some accompanied, and sung in a variety of languages including English, Latin and French. Ranger Chorale will preview their performance for the annual Mississippi Choral Directors Association where they will perform in November.
The concert is free and open to the public. There will be t-shirts and hoodies for sale in the Heindl Center lobby. Supplies are limited.
