Northwest Fine Arts Students Take Home 9 State Art Awards

by Sarah Smith-Hutchinson

Senatobia, MS (05/04/2026) — Northwest Mississippi Community College students received nine awards and two honorable mentions for their artwork pieces at the Mississippi Community College Art Instructors' Association (MCCAIA) student exhibition.

"The MCCAIA State Competition is an annual Mississippi community college juried exhibition that highlights the best visual communication in the state," said Northwest art instructor Lucia Nelson. "This year, the exhibition was hosted by East Mississippi Community College, and Northwest students competed against full-time community college students. Since Northwest students are juried into the exhibition before judges make final award decisions, just being included in the exhibition is an exceptional honor. Over the last several years, Northwest has had unprecedented success at this competition. This year, Northwest students were awarded a total of 11 awards!"

Northwest placed first in printmaking for "The Moon Watcher" by Cortnee Pinion of Sarah, and second place for "Rainy Day" by Haven Barker of Olive Branch. They also placed first in ceramics for "Long Neck Green Bottle" by Sam Henderson of Vaiden, and second for "Speaker" by Rose Honeycutt of Senatobia. Barker also won first place for her digital art piece "Hanahaki Card." Honeycutt received a first place award for her sculpture "CRT-TV."

Henderson received second place for his painting "Where It All Started." In drawing, Nora Brown of Senatobia won second for her piece "Redacted Footage." Mi'Niyah Bell of Greenville won second for her 3D Design "Strawberry Cake."

Honorable mentions included photography for "Colorful Leaf" by Cera Davis of Coldwater, and in sculpture for "Retro Sneaker" by Pinion.
