Northwest Football Alumnus Terry Lawrence Becomes a Northwest Hall of Famer

by Sarah Smith-Hutchinson

Senatobia, MS (12/01/2025) — Northwest Mississippi Community College's football alumnus and Holly Springs native Terry Lawrence named a Hall of Famer at Northwest's Homecoming Celebration in October.

Lawrence began his claim to fame when he played a pivotal role in the Rangers offensive success during the 1981-1982 seasons. He was a part of the Rangers' first national championship win as well as getting accolades like the All-Region 23 and NJCAAA All-American recognitions in 1982.

When Coach Franklin recruited him, he said that Franklin told him about guys he'd grown up with and how that their time at Northwest changed them. Lawrence found that they set really high standards for them that set both them and the team up for success.

"Coach Franklin I think he touched everybody, because he was always there when you were down," said Lawrence.

He said the impact that the coaching staff at that time had on them couldn't be overlooked because without the support of the coaches they would've never made it to where they wanted to be.

Afterwards, when Lawrence transitioned into the military, he found it was easier in the military because he was used to doing things fully, without compromise. He'd learned that important lesson about doing things right and well from his coaches who made sure to instill those virtues in him. He spent 30 years in the army, and said he was proud to have served and that he believes it was appreciated what he did.
