by Sarah Smith

Senatobia, MS (10/31/2024) — Northwest Mississippi Community College's Jazz Ensemble will perform at the Heindl Center for the Performing Arts on November 5 at 7 p.m.

With a wide variety of music, this concert seeks to set audience members interest aflame with tunes both new and old.

"I believe the concert will be fantastic The Jazz Ensemble has a large variety of music of a number of style," said John Ungurait, assistant director of the bands and low brass instructor. "We will open with a number made famous by the Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, 'Count Bubba.' We are also performing Take Five from the Brubeck Quartet Album 'Time Out' and there is always room for some Baise and Les Hooper."

This year's band have explored different sounds including that of funk and soul legends, Tower of Power, progressive jazz musicians such as Ron Nelson, and funky tunes by Jaco Pistorius. Performances like this seek to challenge the young musicians' talents and abilities while also showcase all that they've developed so far.

The Northwest Jazz Ensemble concert is a chance for the community to get to listen to a wide variety of music and support these local musicians performing in their own backyard.

The event is free and open to the public. If you'd like to learn more about Northwest Fine Arts, please visit https://www.northwestms.edu/programs/academic/fine-arts-department/music
