Northwest Mississippi Community College Named One of the Best Colleges for Vets

by Sarah Smith-Hutchinson

Senatobia, MS (11/20/2025) — Northwest Mississippi Community College was named on the Military Times 2025 Best for Vets college rankings on Nov. 17, 2025. This year's rankings include 357 institutions, making the largest field in the program's history.

"For 15 years, Best for Vets has helped transitioning service members find schools that not only welcome veterans but actively invest in their success," said Jon Simkins, executive editor of Military Times and Sightline Media Group. "The record-breaking participation this year shows that higher education leaders are listening and working to create environments where veterans can thrive academically and personally."

Northwest is honored to be a part of this list, and is included thanks to many administrators, such as Dr. Don Jones, assistant dean at DeSoto Center who prioritize the needs of veterans. Jones said he is deeply honored that Northwest was chosen for this honor.

"Our military-connected students hold a special place in the NWCC family," said Dr. Jones. "We salute their service, respect the unique experiences they bring, and greatly value the leadership, discipline, and determination they contribute every day in our classrooms and across our campuses."

Dr. Jones said that this dedication begins under Northwest's President, Dr. Michael J. Heindl's leadership all the way down to every department and employee as they're fully committed to serving those who served their country. To him, this recognition is just confirmation of that commitment and showcases the importance of that.

"We strive for optimum care of our active duty servicemembers and veteran students, as well as their spouses and dependents," said Jessica Poole, Northwest's Financial Aid counselor/VA SCO. "As the college's VA certifying official, I am blessed to serve this particular body of students."
