Northwest President Dr. Michael Heindl Receives Prestigious T.P. Vinson Award from The University of Mississippi
Senatobia, MS (09/11/2026) — Northwest Mississippi Community College's President Dr. Michael J. Heindl has received the prestigious T.P. Vinson Award from the University of Mississippi. On Sept. 3, the University of Mississippi's Director of DeSoto and Grenada campuses, Dr. April Holifield-Scott, gave the award to Dr. Heindl for his outstanding work on the partnership between Northwest and Ole Miss.
"It is indeed an honor and privilege to receive the T.P. Vinson Award, and it means so much because it is a testament to, and tangible example of, the great friendship and partnership we at Northwest have with our friends at Ole Miss DeSoto," said Dr. Heindl. "We look forward to even greater opportunities in the future as we both seek to serve our great students and communities."
The partnership between Northwest and Ole Miss-DeSoto began in 1996 when they expanded to the shared campus off W.E. Ross Parkway in Southaven. The 2+2 Program has allowed students to go directly from Northwest to Ole Miss, finishing their bachelor's degree all at one campus. Since opening, it has served thousands of students and served the community through various outreach programs, including Spooktacular, EasterFest, Food Truck days and more. The 2+2 Path 4 program has even partnered with businesses such as Amazon to help prepare their workforce for changing technology, gain specialized skills, and advance these students in their careers.
"For nearly 30 years, Northwest and Ole Miss-DeSoto have worked side by side to give students a clear path from community college to a four-year degree," said Dr. Holifield-Scott. "Dr. Heindl has been a steady hand in that partnership, and this award is our way of saying thank you for believing in what we're building together. This one means a lot to us."
The award is named after the late Dr. T.P. Vinson who was an associate dean and faculty member at the University of Mississippi School of Education. As an educator, he was someone known to fight for students and their education. The award was named in his honor and goes to a recipient outside of the University of Mississippi-DeSoto to honor involved individuals who help the campus grow in student services and community outreach.
"Most students who transfer to Ole Miss- DeSoto come through word-of-mouth referrals from Northwest faculty and staff - a sign of how much trust has built up between the two institutions over time," said Dr. Holifield-Scott. "The partnership isn't just academic. The 2+2 Golf Tournament, which happened this past Thursday at Cherokee Valley Golf Club, raises money for a scholarship fund supporting students in the program."
