Northwest's Percussion Ensemble and Steel Band Concert April 23

by Sarah Smith

Senatobia, MS (04/05/2024) — The Northwest Mississippi Community College Percussion Ensemble and Steel Band concert will be held April 23 at the Heindl Center for the Performing Arts at 7 p.m. Director of the groups is John Ungurait, assistant director of Bands. The concert is free to the public.

Northwest Percussion will perform a variety of standard and modern percussion pieces, from the Brazilian stylings of Ary Barroso to "Winter" from Antonio Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons."

"They (Northwest Percussion) will also perform 'Music for Pieces of Wood,' written for five separate wooden sounds from wood blocks to claves," said Ungurait. "The Steel Band will perform in the second half of the concert, and they will perform traditional Soca and Calypso music as well as the old time standard 'Jamaica Farewell,' as well as some Jimmy Buffet for all the Parrot Heads out there."

This concert is a great opportunity for those seeking to listen to great music while supporting Northwest students and staff.

"All of the performances will be fantastic, with some really wonderful students who have worked extremely hard all semester to prepare these performances with a little something for everybody," said Ungurait.
