Northwest Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble Will Perform at Heindl Center for the Performing Arts

by Sarah Smith

Senatobia, MS (04/21/2023) — Northwest Mississippi Community College's Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Winds will perform in their annual Spring concert on April 27 at 7 p.m. at the Heindl Center for the Performing Arts.

Timothy Garrett, director of Bands at Northwest, is leading the bands in this concert, and is excited for the opportunity to play in the Heindl Center. This is the first time the bands are getting to perform an official concert in the Heindl Center.

"This is many students' first time even seeing that side (the Heindl Center)," Garrett said.

For many band students this will be one of their last times performing as a Northwest student and sets the stage for the rest of their college careers.

"There's a difference between performing and seeing it," said Logan Orman of Senatobia, Northwest sophomore on the general studies pathway and a member of the Symphonic Winds.

This concert will have all the band students performing, in addition to a few guests such as Brandon Lewis, a former classmate of Garrett's from the University of Mississippi, whose parents attended Northwest. Lewis will be a soloist on trumpet, playing "Believe Me, if All Those Endearing Young Charms."

A special song for the students to perform is "William Tell Overture," which according to Garrett is the unofficial fight song for Northwest. Often, it's played during football games.

Another song that's special to Garrett is "Nobles of the Mystic Shrine" which was written by John Philip Sousa, who wrote marches for the military. This song is hitting its 100th anniversary this year. This song is also close to Garrett's heart because his grandfather was a Shriner.

Garrett said the selection of songs was a combination of choosing what suited students musically and what would challenge them while finding those songs with a special significance.
