Northwest Mississippi Community College inducts 18 new members into the mathematics honor society Mu Alpha Theta on April 4, 2025. Mu Alpha Theta is a national high school and two-year college mathematics honor society focused on excellence and interest in mathematics. Founded at the University of Oklahoma in 1957, the honor society boasts over 100,000 members across over two thousand schools across the United States and 23 foreign countries. Like most honor societies, this allows students to have unique opportunities for scholarships and community with like-minded students. "We are excited to have 18 students initiated into Mu Alpha Theta this year," said instructor of Mathematics, Dr. Jennifer Jones. "These students have excelled in their math courses, and they are very deserving of this recognition."

Northwest Mississippi Community College's Theta Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa inducted new members during the Fall 2024 semester. Phi Theta Kappa is a two-year honor society to celebrate educational excellence at their two-year institutions and beyond. This honor society opens students up to multiple scholarship opportunities including transfer scholarships at state universities like Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Delta State, and University of Southern Mississippi. To qualify to be a part of PTK students must have completed 12 hours of coursework with at least at 3.5 GPA. Once a student is eligible, they receive an invitation usually by mail.

Phi Theta Kappa is a two-year honor society to celebrate educational excellence at their two-year institutions and beyond. Northwest Mississippi Community College's Gamma Beta Phi inducted 116 members on April 3. Gamma Beta Phi is a service minded honor society that celebrates servitude of the community and academic excellence. Gamma Beta Phi was founded in Spartanburg, South Carolina by a group of Southern college educators and is a natural extension of the Beta Club, which is a high school honor society. They work on projects such as collecting books for St. Jude Children's Hospital, collecting shoes for citizens of Iraq, and many more charitable acts.

Northwest Mississippi Community College's Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society inducted six new members at their annual induction ceremony on April 18 at the Math and Science Building on the Senatobia campus. "Mu Alpha Theta is a national honor society for students who have excelled in their math courses," said Jennifer Jones, instructor of Mathematics at Northwest. "Students must meet the academic qualifications for induction into Mu Alpha Theta. Each of our 2024 initiates are dedicated to their academic studies and are very deserving of this honor. I have enjoyed getting to know these students and wish them success in the future."

The Northwest Mississippi Community College Theta Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa inducted 43 new members on April 28 at the Haraway Center during spring induction ceremonies.

Northwest Mississippi Community College inducted 65 new members of the National Technical Honors Society (NTHS) on March 22. This honor is given to students who earn a 3.2 GPA in their field of study and maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA overall.

Northwest Mississippi Community College's Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society welcomed 37 students into the Theta Sigma chapter on the Senatobia campus during its fall induction ceremony Sept. 19 at the Haraway Center. Following a welcome by PTK Advisor and District Director of Social Sciences Instruction Kristin Davis, new officers were installed into the organization. Keynote speaker for the event was Northwest President, Dr. Michael J. Heindl, who spoke about student success among PTK members. New members were then inducted through the pledge, signing of the oath, and lighting the flame of knowledge.

Northwest Mississippi Community College held an inaugural induction ceremony for the college's newly-formed National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) on Tuesday, March 19 at the Fine Arts Auditorium in Senatobia. The society is open to Career-Technical Education (CTE) students who maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 both cumulatively and in their CTE classes. At Northwest, 111 students were inducted into the NTHS. Students inducted represented all campuses at Northwest: Senatobia, DeSoto, Oxford, Olive Branch, Ashland and online. The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Michael Heindl, president of Northwest who praised the students for their hard work and dedication. Several students took part in a candle ceremony representing the light of knowledge and the seven NTHS attributes that members should embody: skill, honesty, service, responsibility, scholarship, citizenship and leadership. The students were invited to come forward to sign the membership roll and then received their pins. After the pinning, the ceremony was completed with the reciting of the NTHS pledge. Dr. Tonyalle Rush, Career Center director, is the primary adviser for NTHS. She was instrumental in establishing the college's chapter. Northwest Chapter #4485 of the National Technical Honor Society was officially chartered on Nov. 29, 2018. Dr. Rush decided to initiate the process of chartering NTHS as a retention initiative to increase student engagement in students enrolled in Career and Technical programs. "Student engagement and retention is a top priority in my role at the college. I am honored to serve our students at Northwest. The induction ceremony was beautiful, and I'm extremely proud of our students," Rush said. According to the NTHS website, membership benefits also include a certificate, member ID card, diploma seal, window decal and graduation tassel. Students also have access to recommendation letters and eligibility to apply for scholarships to further their education. The National Technical Honor Society currently serves approximately 100,000 active members and nearly a million members since its inception in 1984. Awarding over $2 million in scholarships to date, NTHS honors the achievements of top CTE students, provides scholarships to encourage the pursuit of higher education, and cultivates excellence in today's highly competitive, skilled workforce.
